Headed out to the shores for a dive. Great conditions at the shores – flat surface, no surge, and good viz…most important the canyon was full of life…A few really cool encounters. Once I dropped down at the canyon wall, I saw this blenny was totally out of a crevice.
I was heading north toward the V point, then saw this Aegires albopunctatus.
I was not planning to spend much time since I just got some good shots of this nudi. But it kept on crawling toward me and posing right in front of my camera. I just could not resist.
While I was taking pictures of the Aegires albopunctatus, I noticed all the krill attracted by my light. But there were something new. A swarm of baby octopus came.
They were newly hatched tiny babies, moving rapidly and constantly. It was difficult to focus. I was lucky to get a few shots.
Under the wall, I spotted a dirona picta.

La Jolla Shores
Time: dusk / night
Temp: canyon 52 – shallows like a hot tub
Viz: nice fairly clear below 65’ – shallows 5’ very smoggy
Waded into Neptune’s domain with Weiwei for a really nice dive.
Viz was blah in shallows but quickly opened up as we plummeted over the wall through the very noticeable thermo.
In calm and clear conditions I headed for VP and Weiwei stayed behind to focus on a particular macro subject matter.
Lots of juvie Rockfish in the water column, many Heart Urchins scattered about, some large Navanax on patrol, Pleurobranchs are out as well, and a few large Cardinalfish near their old smaller den.
At VP, many Decorator Crabs, and all were adorned with yellow sponge-like coiffure…with some devouring the dead Octos strewn about. A large, fat, Lizardfish, the size of a small baseball bat lay in wait.
Back in the toasty smoggy shallows, highlight critter was a nice size Tope Shark who leisurely swam a few feet in front of me at 27′. Looked like a fat female. Got my attention. Although harmless, it’s a good reminder of how small and vulnerable and insignificant one is…alone…in the dark…with low murky viz.
