La Jolla Shores Night Dive

Tonight the shores was flat. But the visibility in the shallow was horrible – above 25 ft there was basically no visibility. When I got to the canyon edge, it opened up to ~15 ft, not bad at all.

It was cold but extremely calm. The whole area was still completely red, with piles and piles of tuna crabs.

It’s hard to slow down or stop to see anything, because otherwise in a few seconds I would be completely engulfed by them. With little hope to escape, I decided to search if any other critters were around and how their life would look like.

Not a lot were out, or maybe they were there but I could not see them. A few yellow crabs hung around, but looked miserable.

This one was different – huge with pale color and two claws of extraordinary length. It dwarfed all the red tuna crabs around. I was lucky to get a few pictures and video clips before it was bombed away by its relatives.

And that made a great dive!
