La Jolla Shores Night Dive

Seeing the surf was getting smaller, I decided to do a night dive at the shores. It was a surprise to find V street completely empty in a memorial day. The water calmed down a lot and the ocean finally seemed inviting. The surf was still 2-3 ft high but had no power. Kicked out toward the canyon together with a playful sea lion. I dropped down at about 30 ft water. There was a bit surge but the visibility was a solid 15 ft +. The viz remained the same at the canyon, fairly clear and nice. A cool encounter was a pair of Palicus lucasii (stilt crabs). Here is what from Herb:

A pair of stilt crabs (Palicus lucasii)

Greg Jensen ID these crabs as stilt crabs. Palicus lucasii page 60 in his revised book ‘Crabs and Shrimps of the Pacific Coast’. Greg was excited to see live specimens since he had to use preserved one in his book. These are very small deep water crabs that use their long legs for support on soft bottoms.

Cool.

I ended up the north of the V point and slowly worked my way south. But shortly into my dive, there was a big two-spot octo out and about. I followed it for a while until it got into a crevice.

Then the octo started scooping sand, ejecting large sand clouds and trying to scare me away. That was cool to film. I ended up spending almost the whole dive with the octo without getting to the V point. The temperature was 47F all the way from the canyon to 20 ft shallow. Then it slowly warmed up to 62F. The surf picked up a bit during the exit. It was a nice dive.
