Marine Room with Tope Sharks

Did a morning dive at Marine Room and hoped to see a turtle. Walked into a high tide and the surface looked flat. I kicked out to the edge of the reef, put my mask on, and took a peek beneath the surface. It was a surprise: all I could see was fish – small and big, from right below the surface all the way to the bottom. There were a few trigger fish blended in the school. The water was blue and clear. I was excited and dropped down immediately to the bottom. It was beautiful.

I thought this was going to be a spectacular dive, but I was dead wrong. After a beautiful start, I was excited and kicked fast into the reef. In just a matter of minutes, the clear blue water disappeared and in front my eyes was a total salad soup and violent surge. I kept telling myself to kick further with the hope that clear water was hidden somewhere. It felt like looking for water in a desert and it never came. After a little while, I felt hopeless.

Then the shadow of big sharks appeared. Tope shark showed up one after another in circling schools. I was wondering maybe it was the poor visibility that brought these sharks so close. I rarely saw them in arms reach and they were big. The place had an area with exposed sand. The sharks would came, flip their belly, pad the sand, give it a quick twist, and then swam away. This was the second time I saw this behavior and I believe it was at the same spot.

Halfway through my dive, cold water came in and I felt its mixing with the warm water. I was hoping this would improve the visibility. It may helped a little bit but not much. The fish was still there and I ran into quite a few big schools.

I shot quite some footage of the tope sharks but only a few were in focus since the water was so murky. I wish the condition was better. But maybe it is the bad condition that makes the critters more elusive and seeing them more intriguing.
