To avoid the weekend crowd, Mike and I headed out to Mission Bay today. I was quite excited because it’s been a while since last time I dove here. In the early morning, the small beach at Mission Point was quiet. The bay was lake-like.
We followed the boulders and swam out toward the jetty. The water was no deeper than 25 feet but felt pretty cold (~55F). Although it was a bit murky, there was no surge or any current. The dive was uneventful at the beginning. Slowly, we passed the eel grass and came across quite a few Limbaugh’s Cadlina on one boulder. Then we started to see more and more nudibranchs. Each species of nudibranchs occupies a section of the boulders. If one is spotted, most likely there are a few around. We also came across two different kinds of polyclad flatworms. Most critters here are super small and it requires sharp eyes, concentration, and patience to find them. Here are some cool creatures:
- Trapania velox
- MacFarland’s Chromodorid
- Cockerell’s Dorid
- Very cool flatworms (Phrikoceros mopsus)
- Beautiful flatworms (Prostheceraeus bellostriatus)
- Gould’s Bubble Snail
- Three Lined Aeolid
I never cared too much about fish but this time I noticed there were quite a few species of fish here. Some of them were very pretty. We came across one just like a tropical parrotfish, which swam away pretty fast.
On our way back to the shores, we also spotted a large number of Gould’s bubble snails. They dug little holes and came out of the sand to mate. We spent sometime just to photograph these cute snails. Since the water was shallow, our dive last 2.5 hrs.
Here is a short film about the cool encounters.
