Morning Dive at the Shores

Now I believe this time of the year is in fact the winter season of the ocean. Besides the cold temperature, patches of hazy water, particularly at the shallow, make the visibility sometimes unbearable. But with a bit of patience, or a deeper descend to the canyon, amazing visibility appears, and apparently the underwater world is awakening.

This morning I participated a Power Scuba event and spent two dives at the shores. The surface was lake-like flat and the thick cloud in the sky blocked the otherwise scorching sunlight – a condition that couldn’t be better. In the first dive, I headed to the secret garden, and for the first time I found it! I cruised around the patches a few times, enjoying the bright red gorgonians.

On my way back, I stopped at the crap patch. This place was a wonderland. A big scorpionfish was taking a morning nap, an octopus was putting up a solo dance, drifting Pyrosoma atlanticum was emitting mysterious light, Hermissenda was all out on the grass, and the baby Triopha was crawling out to the branches to see the world.

For the second dive, we decided to visit the Vallecitos Point, despite a big pack of students heading to the same direction. Looking far, the visibility was indeed poor; but looking close, what an amazing show! The white sea urchin was running fast. The navanax was patrolling. A group of giant sheep crabs, instead of being shy, jumped really high to snap me. On the canyon wall, sea lemons were all paired up and having a good time to themselves. Above the canyon, a giant halibut appeared but quickly took off before I could get my camera ready.

Upon returning to the shore, we enjoyed a peaceful ride without worrying about the surf, and swam all the way to the 5 ft water. Another two great dives to show that the shores never cease to amaze me.
