These are three individual Navanax, connected head to tail. Their lobes are wide open, exposing their gills, the bright white part that normally hidden. They stayed motionless for quite a while, and the one at the bottom slowly closed the body and departed.

After I came back home, I looked it up in the literature and found the following explanation.

“Navanx inermis may also form copulatory chains of as many as four individuals. In such chains, the individual at the front acts as a female, the individual at the end acts as a male, and individuals in the middle act as both male and female.
