Headed out to Point Loma with Steve and Shaun. It’s a beautiful day out at the sea. During the surface interval we saw three whale in a group swimming together toward the south. The highlight was the tuna crab in the water column. Here is what I wrote.
Just to add to Steve’s report. The scene of the tuna crab at the Point Loma was really cool. These little bugs were smart. They hang around 15 ft water, above fish and below birds, a relative safe place from the predators. In some pockets of water they were so packed that I felt in an alien world. They basically just sat there, busy catching the micro-organisms passing by – what a laid back lifestyle. They were also vigilant – it’s hard to get really close. What a cool encounter.

Here I copy just what Steve wrote for this dive.
Shaun H and Weiwei G joined me today for a couple dives off Point Loma to break in the new year.
We started the morning out with forgotten gear (tanks) and a quick run home to pick up a couple more .
Other divers at Dana Landing had the same issues with forgotten gear and quick rides home to pick stuff up too .NO NAMES ..

The seas were flat and the sun shining for our ride out to the dive site .
We pulled up to the Badlands site and could see Tuna Crabs near the surface, so we hurried up and got in to play with them .
I had my kit lens on (18-55) to see what good/bad it was , and it turned out to be the perfect lens for the Tuna crab .
After dropping down to the bottom we had 20-25 ft vis on dive #1and a little better for dive #2 .
There was a slight current heading north on the surface and heading west on the bottom .
Just enough to make taking pic’s of pelagic crabs a PITA
During our surface interval, a TRIO of whales passed by within about 50 ft of the boat .
They were traveling south nice and slow so we could see them surface and fluke action for a couple minutes .
Good Friends, great conditions, and awesome marine life .
AWESOME WAY TO START THE NEW YEARS !
