Night at La Jolla Shores

The dive condition at the shores has been pretty bad lately – big surf and horrible visibility. Today there was a window of the calm sea. Although I know the visibility was going to be bad, I decided to give it a try.

It took a little bit timing to get through the surf. They were fast, tall, but not much power. Once I passed the surf zone, it was not difficult to kick out. I dropped down right in front of the canyon and immediately felt the horrible visibility. The water was like soup, so murky that I could barely see any thing.

I cruised along the canyon and got slowly used to the murky water. Clearly, there were still tons of tuna crab in the canyon. I even felt their number increased as the patches seemed bigger and thicker. They liked my red light. If I made a stop at once location, after a minute or so they all got excited and not long I was in a tuna crab shower.

I saw a sandflat elbow crab but with my wide angle it was hard to get a good picture. I cruised along the canyon wall to the V point. Right under the point, there was a mid-sized lobster, very quiet. It was a nice subject to practice wide-angle shots.

After I passed the V point, I came across two California sea slugs. There have been showing up often lately in this area. So I practiced more of wide-angle.

Heading further north, I felt the water turned colder. There were more tuna crabs on the north of the V point. Since there was really not much else to see under such conditions, I snapped a few more shots. But truly I wish them go away soon.

Horrible conditions – but bad or good it’s just part of diving. The pictures turned out nice and I am glad to get a dive in before March finally slipped away.
