Amazing conditions out to the Hogan with Clinton, Timo, and Chris. Overcast sky and super flat surface. The water on the top was sapphire blue and super clear. There was a yellowish layer at about 40-60 ft and then it turned clear again. At the wreck it was a bit dark but the visibility was 40+ ft with no current at all. Initially all the fish stayed way above the wreck, but 5 minutes into the dive, a sea lion came down and all the fish dove down to the wreck. For about a minute, the water turned into a fish soup. That was amazing. Following Timo’s description, in the second dive we found one wolf eel in a pipe pointing downward almost touching the sand at the bottom. With that weird angle I couldn’t film it though. On the surface, there was a big bait ball with bird and dolphin frenzy. Nice condition and great dives.

Here is the report from Clinton:After a great club picnic yesterday with 7 divers on the Yukon in 2 trips, today we took the club boat to the Hogan. Overcast but flat seas, saw maybe 3 whitecaps on the way home. 33 minutes each way from shelter island.
We dove 2 up, 2 down since we were pretty close to the middle of nowhere and a international border a stone’s throw away.
Lots of sea-life, very healthy. Weiwei and I were south of the boilers with hundreds of blacksmith, etc when they all went bezerk, I saw a huge sea lion 35′-40 feet away at full speed (yes, vis was that good!). Conditions were similar to Steve M’s report… vertically, crystal clear to about 35-40′, then thick muck (5-8ft vis) until it opened up at 85′ and the wreck appeared 35′ down. No current at all, topside or deep.
Vis was 40’+ but dark with the muck layer and overcast clouds, but not at all like LJ Shores on thursday afternoon…
One advantage of 2 up, 2 down is we could exchange info on findings, luckily Timo found a wolf eel in a unique spot on his first dive and we zoomed in on it on the 2nd. Weiwei had his drone and got some footage of a huge baitball 100 yards from the boat with birds, sea lions and dolphin in a frenzy. Outside of the gill-netters setting their gear 100 yards away in the other direction it was a great show of nature.
Great, great weekend! Get out and go deep off a boat and you’ll appreciate classic California conditions, all 52 degrees worth!
