Headed to Point Loma with Steve. The area is filled with nudibranchs and I had lots of cool sightings…I stayed on the same plateau in two dives without even swimming far. Upon the first sight, the reefs did not seem to have much going on; but a closer look would reveal tons of creatures on just one tiny area…The highlight of the encounter was two Thordisa rubescens that Steve found – first sighting for us.

The gill, the color, and the pattern – just a cool creature!
Then there was yellow dorid (Acanthodoris lutea).
While I was taking picture of the yellow dorid, Steve came. I gave him the dorid and found a few Catalina Triopha (Triopha catalinae). They are common, but I have been looking for this nudibranch and hoping to get a few good pictures. I am glad that I finally got it.

There were two at the spot. Here are a few more pictures.
Then there came this yellowfin fringehead: very cute:)
Probably the most abundant nudi was white spotted dorid (Doriopsilla fulva).
And then here came this beautiful flatworm.

Here are a few more shots.
And more yellow dorids.
There are more and more Thordisa bimaculata. Here is the small cluster with three of them. I didn’t even see the third one until working on the picture on my computer screen.

Here are few more shots.

It was a fantastic trip.
Here is the report from Steve.
Weiwei and I decided to go see who was correct.
Swellwatch with 2-3 ft seas or the T.V. weather girl who promised 7-9 ft surf.
There were also forecasts of 30 knot winds .
All from Hurricane Hillary off Mexico.
Well, just like its namesake, Hurricane Hillary was full of bluster and had no impact on us.
Seas were 1 ft and winds were barely noticeable.
We headed out looking for Nudibranc’s at T-Rex
Weiwei tossed the PERFECT anchor toss and we saw that there was a strong southbound current.
The Dive Animals boat came by and had already done one dive.
They reported awesome vis below the current.
Well, out came the Granny lines to pull on to get to the anchor line from the back of the boat., and we headed down the anchor line hand over hand .
Surface currents were strong.
At 10 ft… strong current , 15 ft vis
at 20 ft 5 ft vis , current
at 30 ft, thermocline and vis opened up to the best we have had all year.
Well in the 50 ft range !
It was nice to be 30 ft off the bottom and see all the amazing structure of the site.
As far as Nudi’s went I counted 13 species in the first 10 minutes.
We found a couple rare ones (I.D. after downloading pic’s)
We stayed there for dive #2 and by the 2nd dive, the wind had picked up to a ripping 5 mph.
Still had current though .
It was an Epic day with a great friend.
I do believe I will go back there tomorrow for a boatload of serious nudiphiles …
