Headed out with Steve and Shawn to Point Loma today. It’s the memorial day weekend but the dock was quiet. On our way out, the sea was unusually flat – glassy without a ripple. The water looked clear and blue from the surface. It was fantastic condition.
We spent two dives at one site that Steve just discovered. So before the dive, we were not sure what the underwater topography would look like. The edge of the kelp ran north-west. The first dive I swam to the north. When I dropped down to the bottom, the water was clear and calm. About 10 minutes into the dive, a strong current suddenly picked up. Warm but milky water just poured in. The kelp went from straight-up to nearly flat. The current didn’t last long and in fact at above 60 feet, the water remained calm and clear.
In the second dive, the current became much weaker and the condition improved significantly. Both Shawn and I followed Steve to the south, where the structure became very interesting. We passed two sand channels and came across a structure with a few fingers. Each section of the walls had different features: some of them were covered with beautiful gorgonian and some of them were teemed with nudibranchs. Even the sandy flat at about 90 ft depth was covered with beautiful sea anemones and all kinds of shells.

I didn’t spot any uncommon nudibranchs, but the commone one still gave really nice pictures. Hermissenda is still the most photogenic one.
This most interesting picture went to this family of Limbaugh’s Cadlina.

I also saw lots of San Diego dorids.
Here are the others:
The dives made us quite happy.
On the way back, Steve spotted a purple-stripe jelly and I jumped into the water to get a few pictures. This was my first sighting of this beautiful creature.

Got a few more shots:

Weiwei G and Shawn H joined me for a couple very cool dives off point loma today.
We do a site it’s new to me and I spotted on the depth finder yesterday.
It is now another favorite and we will be diving many more times.
I guess I’ll call the new spot Weiwaypoint
Lots of very cool structure, nudi’s and fish.
Is today range from 25 feet to 40 feet .
On dive 1 ran into the craziest currents I’ve ever seen off point loma .
Halfway through the dive the kelp started to lay down and actually got streaming straight off the top of the cliff heading west at 75 feet deep!
I had to drop down over the wall with the kelp streaming out over my head with current streaming over top of me.
I made it back to the anchor and had to go hand over hand up the anchor line until I hit 60 feet.
Then the current disappeared.
At 40 feet there is a pretty good current going east .
Just made the kelp bow back in the other direction.
So I stayed at 50 feet and just toured around looking over the new site.
I would drop back down to 65 70 feet and ride the current back to the anchor and then come up and ride the current back the other way and repeat the fun.
By the end of the dive the current seem to be slacking a little so we decided to stay and check out features in the other direction.
Lots of really cool structure that way too and my critter of the day was it toupe shark in the distance.
Also spotted a really real nudity and will I.d. it later
Gotta love it when conditions are this fantastic
, people on board are this cool , and diving this is interestingSteve M
