I joined Power Scuba today for Scripps Canyon Dive. This is the second time of the year I visited Scripps Canyon. The dive condition lately has been horrible – big waves and poor visibility. Today the water was flat but I expected low visibility.
When we got to the site, it turned out the tide was the main concern. For some reason, the water level was fairly high. Even at low tide today, we didn’t see much beach. There was a high chance that at high tide, we would be able to drive out. We skipped setting up canopies, barbecues, and the tables; instead, we were rushing to get into the water.
The waves were small but the water was very yellowish. The buoy that marked the canyon entrance was gone so we had to do an estimated line up. No surprise that the visibility was bad. I couldn’t see much until I dropped on the sandy bottom. There was an obvious tilting so it’s not difficult to figure out where the canyon was. In no time, I was at a notch and the deep canyon opened right in front of me.
It was dark but the water was calm. As a result, the wall was actually pretty clear. There were a lot of strawberry anemones but I noticed the lack of nudibranchs on the wall. For quite a while, I didn’t see any nudibranch. I was also at a location more north than I usually dove so the wall structure looked new to me. There were also a lot of lobsters. I wished I had my wide angle setup; for closeups the visibility should not be a problem.
Then slowly I started to see more and more nudibranchs on the wall. Nothing really uncommon, and surprisingly I didn’t see other species such as San Diego dorid or Doriopsilla spaldingi.
I was cruising along the canyon, in and out of the notches, and suddenly I came across this giant sea bass resting in a narrow notch. We were face to face and there was no exit on the side. I stayed quiet and the fish was calm, slowing swimming by me and disappeared into the dark green. Then I turned and after a few kicks here it was again, resting next to a crevice. This time the fish didn’t swim away. I was with my macro lens and not much I could do to get a nice shot. Instead, I was just watching it. We stared at each other for quite a while. What an experience.

After the first dive, I found that the water was pretty high. We decided to cancel the second dive, packed our gears and left the beach. It’s a beautiful day today and it was nice to get out and get one dive at the canyon.
