Scripps Canyon Diving

Today I spent two great dives at Scripps Canyon. The weather was beautiful and the dive condition was great. On the surface the surf was small and there was basically no current at all. Underwater, the visibility was average, but all due to particulates. Up close, it was clear. There was no surge at all. Overall great conditions.

I kicked out to the buoy and followed the line to the draw, where the canyon started. On the northern side, the canyon wall was mostly vertical, but horizontally it had a series of concaves. The first concave is a hot spot for marine life. There was a ton of nudibranchs. Among them, yellow edged cadlina (Cadlina luteomarginata) was an easy one to spot because of their bright white color.

But the most exciting one is a big Doriopsilla spaldingi.

I saw them before at Point Lome, but this was the first time I saw this type of nudibranch in La Jolla.

The Scripps Canyon is famous for nudibranchs. Of course I saw many other types.

Around the same area, there was another interesting sighting. It was a kind of Christmas tree worm.

Normally they were very shy, but this one allowed me to take some pictures.

Normally with this many divers the canyon was crowded. But today it felt very not so. Most of the time, I was just with myself. So I took the opportunity and spent all my first dive in the same concave.

Another creature abundant at the Scripps Canyon was swell sharks. I didn’t travel far in my first dive so only found it in the second dive after other divers told me the location. It was tucked nicely inside the crevices along the canyon wall.

It was a cool sighting.

Outside the concave at the corner, there was a big school of blacksmith. I have a soft spot for large fish schools, this one was no exception. I stayed along the wall for quite a long time in both dives to enjoy the view.

The canyon, the fish school, and the cruising sheephead – a beautiful underwater scenery.

What great dives!
