Shallow Reefs at Point Loma and Canon 100 mm Macro

I joined a trip to Point Loma to dive a few shallow reefs and took the opportunity to shoot with 100 mm macro lens. The reefs have nothing special. It’s very surgy and the underwater scene looked very much like a dive at the cove. The 100 mm macro is not  a lens that magnifies the subject more. In fact, it has a magnification of 1, which is the same as 60 mm. I do need more distance for focus, which is an advantage for shy subject. With a shallower depth, 100 mm is supposed to give a more blurred background

Two interesting subjects showed up. One is a juvenile garibaldi, which was both skittish and curious at the same time.

Another subject was a Chromodoris mcfarlandi, which gives me a perfect side view.

I do like the feeling of the pictures. But with a greater focal length, it is more demanding on visibility and focus.

Here are a few more pictures. A great dive.
