Shark Dive at Marine Room

After seeing Bob‘s report, Mike and I headed out to Marine Room for a shark dive. The water was lake flat; however, knowing that the visibility was poor, we didn’t have high expectations. Marine room wasn’t an area we dove often. It took us quite a while to find the shallow reefs.

As soon as we dropped down, Mike saw a shark and signaled me with his eyes wide open. I was busy clearing my mask and didn’t see anything. Then we cruised slowly toward the west. There was so much life to see. Sheltered under each kelp frond were all kinds of baby fish. As I was trying to get closer, they started to play hide-and-seek. On the other hand, the sea bass was not in a playful mood, resting still in the middle of the water column and staring at me with a stern face. Once in a while, we came across schools of larger fish and the view became stunning. In the cracks, lobsters and moray eels were easily found, but we didn’t pay too much attention. Our eyes were focused far to spot any signs of sharks.

Finally we saw them. Appearing first as a faint shadow, the soupfin shark emerged from the murky water, dark grey on the back and shinning silver on the belly. They were shy, swimming by fast and disappearing with a blink of eyes. Soon we realized that they were schooling, three or four of them, circling the area and taking turns to show up. You can imagine how excited we were. Before the dive, we weren’t even sure to see one shark. Now we saw a bunch.

After nearly two hours in water, we started to swim back. As we got to the patches of eelgrass, another school of sharks appeared. This time they were leopard sharks. However, as the visibility dropped even worse, we couldn’t get a clear view of them.

Then we heard the noise from the snorkelers, and realized we were swimming in 5-foot water. We stood up and started walking. The beach outside of the restaurant, though empty earlier, was now packed with a happy crowd, enjoying an ordinary summer Sunday. Seeing so many sharks is exciting, but what truly amazing is how close we are to this ocean wildness.
