Shores – a Very Cold Night Dive

Headed out to the shores with Jackie for a night dive. The conditions was fairly good. The whole dive seems pretty uneventful, but I realized that I was wrong while processing the pictures. There were actually a lot going on. I saw a few octopuses but not as many as a few nights before.

They were pretty active searching food along the canyon wall.

The tuna crabs were still around. At various locations the patches were very thick.

Of course there were tuna crabs. Sometime they stay in crevices as if just made for them.

I also came across a female one, alone and no eggs.

My temperature reading was 47F. It was cold. Jackie left at some point during the dive. I copied her report below. It was a fun dive.

La Jolla Shores
Time: night
Temp 47 (Weiwei’s computer) – 49 (my computer) brrrrr degrees
Viz: canyon slight haze – as far as lights
Quickie report. Late evening dive in arctic waters. Thermo at 23’.
We headed north in fairly decent viz. With hands and feet burning, I finally succumbed to the cold and had to retreat to the shallows shortening my dive. Highlight critters – lots of baby Tonguefish, and the usual mosh pits of Tuna Crabs. Yellow Crabs mating, a few large Octos out hunting, and several large Horn Sharks in shallows. A great dive.
