I had an opportunity to board Dive Animal’s boat with Chris, Jonathan and Timo to dive P38. (The report for the same trip last year can be found here.)

We launched the boat at Ski Beach and headed north to La Jolla. Near the Torrey Pines area, we were greeted by a large pod of dolphins. We encountered them twice. There were a lot of babies and we could tell by their pinkish belly. They were breaching out of the water and seemed to have a lot fun.

P38 is a deepish dive site, approximately 130 ft. But the challenge is to locate the wreck after dropping the anchor. Johnathan was gracious to head to the anchor first and we watched his search pattern around the boat by tracing his bubbles. Soon a safety sausage surfaced and we knew that he got it. We then jumped off the boat and headed to the wreck.

The visibility was easily around 50 ft with no noticeable current – great conditions. I was focused on the wreck itself and basically ignored all the wolf eels. Here are some shots of the airplane.

We all had a great dive and from there we headed south to God’s rock, a dive site at La Jolla Kelp bed. Large schools of fish handing around the giant kelp is a typical scene here.

Near a big boulder, I spotted this Gopher rockfish, which did not shy from my camera.

While it was easy to be distracted from all the giant kelp, a closer look at the the reef would reveal a lot of life. It was beautiful throughout the dive.
