Super Moon Night Dive at the Shores

Tonight is the super moon. Although feeling a bit tired, I decided to check out what’s going on at the canyon. When I kicked out to the canyon, I could see that the moon slowly rose behind the palm trees, big and yellow in the dark sky. The tide was rising as well, but kicking out was effortless.

I dropped off at the main wall and swam to the north toward the Vallecitos Point. Came across a yellow spotted cadlina. They are popular in Point Loma and Scripps Canyon but not at the shores.

The yellow dorid was popular at the shores but most of the time they were sensitive to the light and became very shy when I was trying to take pictures. This one wasn’t too shy, sticking out the gills while I was taking pictures.

Near the Vallecitos Point, there was a huge scorpion fish nesting on the canyon wall. It was interesting because there were two huge harbor seals aggressively hunting around the area, stirring up all the dusts. However, they missed the scorpion fish.

Next to the wall, a cabazan, which I saw it last time, was hidden inside the kelp.

While I was going to turn back to the shores, I spotted a mantis shrimp, the same yellow kind as I saw before. It was constantly moving, making it difficult to take pictures. It seemed like the shrimp was looking for a new home as it was trying to dig the sand.

On my way back at the sandy flat, I saw this cute fringe head, sitting on the sand. Beautiful color.

Then an octopus came along. This was a gnarly one – it seemed like it was trying to mimic the kelp.

When I got back to about 10 ft water, I saw a few baby barracuda. Never saw them before.

Here are my other encounter.

Just a fun dive!
